About this item
Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica. Unlike most gemstones, which are crystalline, opal’s structure is composed of tiny spheres of silica gel. It’s this unique structure that causes the play-of-color. When light enters the opal, it interacts with these spheres, diffracting and breaking into its component colors. The size and arrangement of the silica spheres determine the colors displayed and the pattern of the play-of-color.
